Elf on the Shelf is a small scout elf which comes with the 2005 American Christmas-themed picture book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition. The elf hides in people’s home to observe the happenings throughout the day. And when the whole family is already asleep at night, the elf flies to the North Pole by magic and reports to Santa Claus the good and bad things that he saw, before returning home and hiding in a new spot. This is how Santa knows who has been naughty or nice.
Elf on the Shelf gets his magic by being named and loved by a child. He wears a red top with white collar, red pants, red sneakers, white gloves, and a red elf hat with white trim.
About Elf on the Shelf
The idea of Santa having scout elves came from one family’s (Carol Aebersold’s family) Christmas tradition, where their vintage elf Fisbee is seen by Carol in a new spot at home every morning after supposedly having reported to Santa the night before.
