Alex Russo never had one uniform. Across four seasons of Wizards of Waverly Place her wardrobe changed almost every episode, and the show has no signature wizard robe to copy. So the easiest Alex Russo costume to recognise is a mix of her trademarks: a graphic tee under a long scarf, a chunky ring, long dark curls and her wand. The main outfit below is built from the wiki's Season 2 promo photo, which shows her signature layered, scarf-and-accessories style. Two alternates cover her later-season style and her grown-up look from the sequel.

Everything here was chosen against the still, not from memory. In the Season 2 promo image Alex wears a short-sleeve tee in a faded lavender with a purple, teal and cream floral print, a thin scarf with stripes of teal, yellow, pink and navy, a wide braided cream-and-gold belt, dark pants, a big teal cocktail ring and a purple cuff, with long, dark, loosely curled hair that lightens to a caramel shade at the ends. The show's own style page says the same thing in words: Season 2 is her cardigans, vests, boots, scarves and lots of graphic tees, always with a peace-sign accessory somewhere.

No listing matches her exact tee print, because it is a styled show shirt, so the lilac tee above is the closest floral graphic in the right washed purple. Pick a soft, slightly oversized fit. The scarf is the same kind of substitute: it is a multicolor stripe with fringe, in bluer, darker tones than hers, and any thin striped scarf in teal, pink and yellow works just as well. If you already own a peace-sign necklace or ring, add it, since that was her running accessory that season.

The wig matters more than any single garment. Alex's hair is thick, dark and wavy with a side part, and the ends look lighter than the roots. A long wavy wig with a few highlights and side-swept bangs is the right shape; wear it loose and leave a few curls in front of your shoulders.

Alex's wand

Alex's wand is a maroon shaft with a glass orb at the tip that glows different colours when she casts, and in the show she usually tucks it into whatever boot or sock she is wearing. Nobody sells that exact prop, so the light-up wand above is a reddish-brown toy that lights at the tip, which reads correctly on camera. It is an obvious toy. If you are going to a convention, school or a party, check the event's prop rules before carrying it in; many venues want a wand that is short, soft-tipped or checked at the door.

Alternate Alex Russo looks

Later-season Alex (Seasons 3 and 4). The show's style page describes her outfits here as more grown-up: skinny jeans, ruffled or loose long-sleeved blouses, striped tops, vests and cardigans, floral prints, heels and boots, and a headband in many Season 4 episodes. A promo photo on the wiki (the season isn't labelled) shows a light yellow-green blazer over a striped top, long pendant necklaces, dark skinny jeans and long, loose brown waves. Put a yellow blazer over a yellow and white striped tank, add a long leaf pendant necklace, wear the same black jeans, and keep the wig. The original stripes were closer to olive and cream, so if you would rather match that, look for an olive-and-cream stripe instead of the yellow one.

Adult Alex (Wizards Beyond Waverly Place). In the sequel series, Selena Gomez returned as an adult Alex who serves on the Wizard Tribunal. In the season 1 episode "Nigh Is Now!" she wears a crimson satin blouse with ruffled shoulders under a black pinstripe vest with gold double-row buttons, black pinstripe trousers, and her red wand. A red satin blouse, a black pinstripe vest and black pinstripe trousers get you the shape. The vest above has plain black buttons, so sew on gold ones to match. Wear your own hair down and dark, and use the same wand. This is the easiest Alex costume if you want something that looks like dress-up rather than a teen outfit.

Season 1 Alex. The show's style page calls her first-season look tomboy with a girly side, with layered tops, skirts over colourful tights, Converse or boots, funky hats and nature necklaces. Promo photos from then show her with a short bob and a headband. It is a good budget idea if you have a short bob wig already, but it has fewer of the details people search for.

Group and franchise ideas

Alex is the middle Russo sibling, so the natural group is the three wizard siblings (Justin, Alex and Max) with their best friend Harper Finkle. There are no other Wizards of Waverly Place guides on this site yet. For other teen Disney Channel characters, Mal from Descendants is a popular pick, and for another teen witch there is Sabrina the Teenage Witch. More looks are collected under the Disney tag.

About Alex Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place

Alexandra "Alex" Margarita Russo is the protagonist of the Disney Channel sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place, created by Todd J. Greenwald. She is played by Selena Gomez. The show aired from October 2007 to January 2012 and follows Alex and her brothers Justin and Max, who grow up in a Manhattan apartment above their family's sandwich shop while training as wizards. One day they will compete to decide which sibling keeps their magic, and that competition is the show's running plot. Alex is the sarcastic, mischievous one who tends to misuse her magic and then has to fix the results.

The series spawned Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (2009), the special The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex (2013), and the sequel series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place (Disney Channel, 2024 to 2026), in which Gomez appears as an adult Alex in guest episodes.
