|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gold Ball-Tip King's Crown | His crown is gold with rounded ball tips on every point, not the usual pointed spikes β get that detail right and the silhouette reads instantly. | π Check on Amazon |
| 2 | Old Man Bald Wig with Grey Side Hair | King Candy is bald on top with two puffs of wispy grey hair over the ears. A plain bald cap with side hair is much closer to the character than a full wig. | π Check on Amazon |
| 3 | White Dress Shirt | A plain white button-up worn underneath the coat, buttoned to the collar. | π Check on Amazon |
| 4 | Purple Velvet Tailcoat | His coat is a short purple tailcoat, not a floor-length robe β a Victorian frock coat cut is the right shape, worn open over the shirt. | π Check on Amazon |
| 5 | Oversized Red Bow Tie | King Candy's bow tie is huge and shiny red, nearly as wide as his face. Go bigger than a normal bow tie. | π Check on Amazon |
| 6 | White Ruffled Wrist Cuffs | Pleated white cuffs at both wrists stand in for the swirled, icing-like cuff trim on his coat sleeves. | π Check on Amazon |
| 7 | Gold Athletic Shorts | A solid gold base for his striped breeches β see the note below on adding the stripes, since no ready-made pair matches his candy-striped shorts. | π Check on Amazon |
| 8 | Goldenrod Footed Tights | His legs below the breeches are a warm gold-tan. Footed tights in goldenrod get the color without needing separate socks. | π Check on Amazon |
| 9 | Red Velvet Loafers | Slip-on red loafers stand in for his little red shoes. | π Check on Amazon |
| 10 | Candy Cane Walking Cane | He's rarely seen without a cane shaped like an actual candy cane β this one is styled the same way, red-and-white striped with a curved handle. | π Check on Amazon |
King Candy's whole look is a disguise, and that's what makes him fun to dress as: an elderly, foppish, slightly unhinged monarch who rules Sugar Rush from a candy castle, with a booming laugh and a habit of talking about himself in the third person. Underneath it all he's Turbo, a rogue racing-game character who reprogrammed Sugar Rush and crowned himself king β but the character everyone remembers, and the one with all the search demand, is the round little king in the purple coat, not the racer he really is.
Start with the head. King Candy is bald with a big, round, blush-pink nose and only two tufts of grey hair poofing out over his ears β there's no hair on top at all, and no moustache. A bald cap with side hair does the job far better than a costume wig would; if you want to lean into the clown-adjacent design further, a small red foam nose over your own gets his nose shape without full face paint. Add pink blush high on the cheeks and around the nose to match his flushed complexion.
The coat is the next thing people will recognize: short, purple, and fitted, worn open over a plain white shirt with an oversized red bow tie underneath. His coat's cuffs have a swirled white trim that reads like piped icing β a set of pleated white wrist cuffs slipped on over your sleeves gets close enough for a costume built to be seen across a party or a school hallway. His bottom half is where the design gets trickiest to shop for: gold-and-cream striped knee breeches with matching striped stockings. Nothing on Amazon matches that exact horizontal stripe, so start with plain gold shorts and add cream ribbon or fabric-paint stripes across them, then pair with solid goldenrod tights for the legs β the color reads right even without the stripe pattern repeated below the knee. Finish with red slip-on shoes and the candy-cane cane, which he swings around constantly and which is the single easiest prop to get exactly right, since a real candy-cane-shaped walking cane exists.
If you'd rather skip the DIY on the breeches, a purple "king" costume cape-and-crown bundle sold for Halloween gets you close to the color palette fast, though it trades King Candy's short tailcoat silhouette for a longer robe β a reasonable shortcut if you're assembling this the night before.
Going as a group from Sugar Rush? Pair King Candy with Taffyta Muttonfudge, one of his top racers, or with Vanellope von Schweetz for the film's real dynamic β the king who erased her memory and the glitch racer who was always the rightful princess of Sugar Rush.
About King Candy
King Candy is the ruler of the racing game Sugar Rush and the primary antagonist of Disney's Wreck-It Ralph (2012). He presents himself as a genial, if self-important, monarch who runs the Random Roster Race that decides which racers compete each day β a race he rigs to keep Vanellope von Schweetz from ever entering, because her real identity as Sugar Rush's rightful princess threatens the world he's built.
He isn't actually a king at all. King Candy is the disguise of Turbo, a washed-up racer from the game Turbo Time who was unplugged after being replaced by a newer game and, unable to accept it, began "game jumping" β hopping into other arcade cabinets and overwriting them to make himself the star again. When he game-jumped into Sugar Rush, he corrupted its code, reprogrammed the other characters' memories, and crowned himself King Candy.
King Candy was voiced by Alan Tudyk, his first of what has become a role in nearly every Disney animated feature since. Tudyk has said he modeled the character's voice on the classic children's-entertainer cadence of actor Ed Wynn, and the performance earned him an Annie Award for voice acting.
