About Abu
Abu is Aladdin's mischievous, kleptomaniac pet monkey and closest companion in Disney's 1992 animated film Aladdin, as well as its two direct-to-video sequels and the Aladdin: The Series TV show. He's introduced within the film's opening minutes as Aladdin's partner in petty theft on the streets of Agrabah, and the Genie later turns him into a giant elephant for the "Prince Ali" parade, when Aladdin enters the city in disguise as royalty. Abu doesn't speak any real language - his voice, credited as "vocal effects," was performed by Frank Welker - but his greed and loyalty come through regardless. In the Aladdin: The Series TV show, he starts off clashing with the palace's other new arrival, the parrot Iago, before the two eventually become friends.
Abu was created by longtime Disney story artist Joe Grant and is loosely named after the thief character in the 1940 film The Thief of Bagdad; to get his movement right, Disney's animators filmed and studied real monkeys at the San Francisco Zoo. In Disney's 2019 live-action remake, Abu is depicted specifically as a tufted capuchin monkey rather than a generic cartoon monkey.
