About the Beer Girl

Although the beer girls of today wear skimpier clothes, the original concept of the costume was inspired by the traditional dirndl worn by Alps peasant women during the past. It is still popular today because of the well-known German festival, the Oktoberfest.

The Oktoberfest was first done on 1810 and the festivities were to honor the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.

According to Urban Dictionary, the word “wench” refers to a voluptuous female pirate, usually with a reckless attitude, and seen around taverns and bars in seaside fishing towns, and wherever pirates roam. In other meaning, wench can also refer to a pretty young woman who serves the male pirates with drinks and their looks, in which some refer to as a prostitute.

And so, the word’s meaning is up to the interpretation. Nowadays, the wench look is often worn in a lot of medieval fairs and historical events across Europe and America, for example, the Oktoberfest, the most famous beer festival in Germany.
