About Lettuce
Lettuce is a well-known plant worldwide and most commonly used in the preparation of salads, sandwiches, wraps, soups, and vegetable curries. Though it has more than 100 different varieties, including romaine, iceberg, crisphead, loose-leaf, and butterhead, it is mostly grown for its sizable edible leaves. Although it has a short lifespan after harvest, it is easily cultivated leading to annual world production of around 27 million tonnes.
Lettuce was first cultivated in Ancient Egypt, but mostly for its seeds that were used in oil production. It was then selectively bred by the Egyptians into a plant grown for its edible leaves, then passed this on to the Greeks and Romans.
