| 1 | White Ribbed Tank Top | The whole costume hangs on this. It's a plain white ribbed A-shirt, so buy it a size roomy enough to stay loose, then dirty it up with the tips below. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
| 2 | Charcoal Dress Pants | McClane wears dark grey trousers that start the night as part of a travel outfit. A straight-leg charcoal pair gets the colour and the slightly crumpled office look. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
| 3 | Fake Blood Gel | Thick blood gel stays where you put it. Dab it on the shirt, arms, forehead and ankles. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
| 4 | Scar Wax | Build a cut on the eyebrow or cheek, then colour it with the blood gel so it looks like a fresh scrape. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
| 5 | Toy Pistol with Orange Tip | A silver toy pistol with a molded Beretta-style shape and a bright orange safety tip. It's clearly fake, so it works as a prop for the waistband. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
| 6 | Black Walkie-Talkie | He talks to Sgt. Powell over a handheld radio all night. This black two-way radio has the same bulky look. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
| 7 | Chrome Flip Lighter | A brushed chrome Zippo-style lighter for the pocket. It's for show, so keep it unlit and leave it at home if the venue doesn't allow lighters. | ๐ Check on Amazon |
Few Halloween looks are as easy to recognize as John McClane at the end of the night in Nakatomi Plaza. A white undershirt, trousers, bare feet, a few cuts and a lot of grime, and everyone knows who you are.
This guide follows the first Die Hard (1988), the Nakatomi Plaza tank-top look, not the later sequels. If you want the sweaty, bloodied McClane from the poster, this is the one.
A note on the pistol: only use an obviously fake toy with a bright tip, like the one above, and check the rules of your venue, party or convention first. Many events ban prop guns altogether, and a realistic-looking replica can cause real trouble. Don't carry it in public outside the party.
Getting the Details Right
- Go barefoot, or close to it. McClane takes his shoes off early in the night and never gets them back, so he fights the whole film barefoot. It's the most famous detail of the film. For a party floor, bare feet are fine. For a street or a bar, wear skin-tone socks or just go in your normal shoes and mention it.
- Dirty the tank top properly. Rub it with a damp sponge dipped in dark brown or grey face paint or a little coffee grounds and water, then add blood gel across the shoulder, ribs and one side of the neck. It should look torn through, not tidy.
- Sweat and grime. A little baby oil or hair gel on the forehead, chest and arms gives you the sweaty glow. Smudge some dark eyeshadow or face paint under the eyes and on the cheek.
- Cuts in the right places. A scrape on the eyebrow or cheek and small cuts on the forearm and ankles. Don't cover yourself in blood; it should look like one bad night, not a horror movie.
- Waistband pistol, radio in hand. Tuck the toy pistol at the back of the waistband or carry it low in your hand. Keep the radio clipped near the belt or held up to talk.
- Hair. McClane has short, slightly messy dark hair. No wig needed unless you want to match Bruce Willis's hairline exactly.
- The catchphrase. "Yippee-ki-yay" is the line everyone will expect. Save it for a photo or for when someone asks who you are.
Budget and Alternate Looks
- Cheapest version: a white undershirt you already own, dark trousers from your closet, and a bottle of fake blood. The shirt and the blood do 90 percent of the work.
- Skip the lighter. It's the least important item. Leave it out if you want to save money or if the event doesn't allow it.
- Later films: McClane returns in several sequels with different outfits, and this guide only covers the first film's look.
Group Costume Ideas
- Couple: your partner goes as Holly Gennero McClane in an 80s office suit with big shoulder pads and a gold watch.
- Duo: pair up with a friend as Sgt. Al Powell in a police uniform, and keep the radio between you.
- Office party: a group of Nakatomi party guests in 80s business wear, led by a McClane in the tank top, and the villain Hans Gruber in a dark suit, as text-only inspiration for your own group.
About John McClane
John McClane is a New York City police detective in Die Hard (1988). He flies to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve to see his estranged wife Holly at her company's party at Nakatomi Plaza. When terrorists led by Hans Gruber take over the tower, McClane, with no shoes and no backup, becomes the one man who can stop them. He is played by Bruce Willis, and the film was directed by John McTiernan.
The movie opened in July 1988 and went on to become one of the biggest action films of the year. His famous catchphrase, "Yippee-ki-yay," comes from cowboy language and the Roy Rogers catchphrase. Whether it counts as a Christmas movie is a long-running argument, and Wikipedia describes its status as disputed.
