James began his musical career in various bands, including The Mynah Birds, which also included Neil Young. However, legal troubles forced him to pause his music career for a few years. He eventually signed with Motown Records in the late 1970s and released his debut solo album entitled “Come Get It!” in 1978.
James quickly gained popularity with his blend of funk, soul, rock, and R&B music. His energetic stage presence and flashy style became trademarks of his performances.
