Caillou is a bald four-year-old in a yellow polo shirt, and that's really the whole costume. For a kid who's already bald or close to it, this is one of the simplest Halloween outfits out there. For anyone else, especially adults leaning into Caillou's reputation as the internet's favorite "annoying kid," the whole costume lives or dies on a convincing bald cap.

| # | Item | Description | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yellow Button-Collar Polo Shirt | A solid gold-yellow polo with a button placket, sized for kids. This is Caillou's shirt color almost exactly β avoid anything pale lemon or mustard. | π Check on Amazon |
| 2 | Royal Blue Mesh Shorts | Plain bright blue shorts with an elastic waist. Caillou wears simple blue shorts, not overalls or jeans. | π Check on Amazon |
| 3 | Yellow Crew Socks | Solid yellow crew-height socks, worn pulled up. A 4-pack, so there's a spare pair if one gets a grass stain before the party even starts. | π Check on Amazon |
| 4 | Red Canvas Sneakers | Plain red low-top sneakers with a white sole. Caillou's shoes are red with no visible logo. | π Check on Amazon |
| 5 | Latex Bald Cap | For anyone with hair: a beige latex cap that covers and flattens hair under makeup. This is the single most important item for an adult or teen version of the costume. | π Check on Amazon |
| 6 | Yellow Pique Polo Shirt | The same solid yellow polo in adult sizing, for a grown-up or plus-size Caillou. | π Check on Amazon |
| 7 | Royal Blue Chino Shorts | Plain blue shorts in adult sizing to pair with the polo above. | π Check on Amazon |
| 8 | Adult Red Canvas Sneakers | The same plain red low-top sneaker in adult sizing, for the grown-up version of the costume. | π Check on Amazon |
Caillou's look barely changes across the whole show: a yellow short-sleeve polo (with a red button placket at the collar in the original design), blue shorts, yellow socks pulled up to the shin, and red sneakers. There's no jacket, no hat, and no accessories to track down β the entire costume is five items, and the bald head does more work than any of them.
Getting the details right
- The bald head comes first. Caillou has no hair at all, not a shaved-close buzzcut β his whole head is smooth. A child who's naturally bald or has very short hair needs nothing extra. Everyone else needs a latex bald cap (item 5), blended into the hairline with foundation or face paint a shade or two darker than the cap, with any real hair flattened underneath a wig cap first.
- Get the yellow saturated, not pastel. Caillou's shirt is a solid, fairly bright gold-yellow β closer to egg-yolk than to a soft butter yellow. Pale lemon polos read as a generic school uniform instead of the character.
- Keep it shorts, not overalls. Some older merchandise and fan art shows Caillou in overalls, but in the show itself he wears plain blue shorts. Shorts are also the more recognizable and less fussy option to assemble.
- A little red at the collar helps. Caillou's polo has a red snap-button placket running down the front of the collar. If your shirt doesn't have one, a few inches of red ribbon or a red bandana folded thin under the collar gets the same effect from a few feet away.
Kids costume vs. adult meme costume
This is really two costumes sharing one outfit. For a young child β especially one who's already bald or buzzed short β items 1 through 4 are the whole thing, no makeup required, and it reads instantly. For anyone past toddler age, the bald cap (item 5) isn't optional; without it, a yellow shirt and blue shorts just looks like summer camp. Caillou has picked up a second life online as a meme, a running joke about being the most grating preschooler on television, and dressing as an adult "burnt out" Caillou β bald cap, tired expression, same yellow polo β is a common costume-party take that leans into that reputation rather than the wholesome PBS version.
Caillou couples and group costumes
Caillou's world is small and easy to fill out if you're going as a group: his little sister Rosie in a similar yellow-and-blue color scheme, his parents Doris and Boris in plain everyday clothes, or his grey cat Gilbert with simple grey face paint and ears. None of them need much more than what's already in the item table above, recolored.
About Caillou
Caillou started as a Quebec children's book character created by author Christine L'Heureux and illustrator Hélène Desputeaux, with the first book published in 1989 by Chouette Publishing. The animated TV series, produced by CINAR (later Cookie Jar Entertainment), premiered in 1997 and ran for five seasons, airing on PBS Kids in the U.S. from 2000 until late 2020. A CGI-animated reboot premiered on Peacock in February 2024.
Caillou is bald by design, not as a plot point β the show's creators have said they kept him that way so that young viewers who look different, for whatever reason, would see it treated as normal rather than explained away. In English, he was voiced over the original run by Bryn McAuley, Jaclyn Linetsky, and Annie Bovaird.
Outside the show, Caillou has built a second reputation as one of the most-mocked kids' characters on the internet, criticized for tantrums that go unpunished and parodied in viral "Caillou Gets Grounded" video series. That reputation is part of why the character keeps coming up as a costume, in on the joke, decades after the original show aired.
