The park ranger is one of the easiest work-uniform costumes: a flat hat, a gray shirt, green pants and a badge. It's recognizable from across a party, it's comfortable, and most of it can be worn again on your next hike. Add binoculars and a serious look, and you're in charge of the party.

For the full effect, add a name tag above the right pocket that says "Ranger" and your first name, and stand up straight.

Getting the details right

  • Colors matter. The National Park Service uniform is a gray shirt, green trousers and a tan flat hat. Smokey Bear's Forest Service look is an all-green uniform with an olive-green campaign hat. If you want that look, choose an olive campaign hat.
  • The hat stays straight. The flat hat has a stiff, level brim with a four-dented crown. Wear it low and level over the eyebrows, not tilted.
  • Add a prop. A rolled-up trail map, a water bottle or a stuffed bear makes the costume funnier.
  • Real badges. The badge is a prop. Real ranger badges and uniforms are for park staff, so don't pretend to enforce anything.

Park ranger costume ideas to go with it

  • The ranger and Bigfoot: the classic pair, with one of you in a ranger uniform and the other as Bigfoot.
  • A scout troop: a group of friends in khaki and neckerchiefs, with one ranger in charge.
  • A safari or trail crew: add a ranger to a wildlife group, with a bear or a moose.

About Park Rangers

Park rangers protect and look after parks and forests, and they lead tours and talks for visitors. The first national park, Yellowstone, was created in 1872, and the National Park Service has existed since 1916. Harry Yount is credited as the first park ranger.

The uniform has its roots in the U.S. Army cavalry, who guarded the parks from 1886 and wore the wide campaign hat that rangers still call the "flat hat". After a century of changes, the National Park Service uniform became the gray shirt and green trousers rangers wear today.
