The Beverly Hillbillies are a poor hillbilly family from Arkansas in the 1993 American comedy movie The Beverly Hillbillies. They suddenly became billionaires after the head of the family accidentally found crude oil on his property. They then transferred residence to Beverly Hills, California.
They are composed of Jed Clampett, the loving new billionaire father who loves hunting, sponge cakes, and listening to Hank William’s songs, Elly May Clampett, the wilderness tomboy daughter who is into animals, tree climbing, fishing and wrestling, Granny Moses, the shotgun-carrying and ultra-old school grandmother, and Jethro Bodine, the large-appetite nephew of Jed.
Beverly Hillbillies are based on the hillbilly family in the 1962-1971 TV series The Beverly Hillbillies. They wear a long-sleeved button-down poplin shirt, retro boot cut blue jeans, brown work boots, Y-shaped heavy-duty brown suspenders, and a wide-brim brown classic western hat for Jed Clampett; a long-sleeved button-down red plaid shirt, regular blue boot jeans, brown work boots, and a blue denim jacket for Jethro Bodine; a short-sleeved blue shirt with buttons, frayed blue denim shorts, a brown leather belt, and brown cowboy ankle boots for Elly May; and a peter pan collar floral blouse, a vintage brown midi skirt, lace-up brown boots, a brown cardigan sweater, a white waist apron, a colonial mob hat, and round gold-rimmed glasses for Granny Moses.
About Beverly Hillbillies
“The Beverly Hillbillies” was not only a TV series but also a feature film adaptation released in 1993. The movie is a comedic retelling of the Clampett family’s journey from their rural home to the glamorous world of Beverly Hills.
In the film, Jed Clampett (played by Jim Varney) strikes oil while hunting on his property and becomes an overnight millionaire. Unsure of what to do with their newfound wealth, Jed, along with his mother-in-law Granny (Cloris Leachman), his daughter Elly May (Erika Eleniak), and his nephew Jethro Bodine (Diedrich Bader), move to California.
Upon arriving in Beverly Hills, the Clampetts find themselves facing hilarious culture shocks and misunderstandings as they navigate the extravagant lifestyles of the rich and famous. They also attract the attention of various people looking to take advantage of their fortune.
Despite their apparent “hillbilly” manners and unconventional lifestyle, the Clampetts manage to maintain their down-to-earth values and leave a lasting impression on those they encounter. The movie blends slapstick comedy with fish-out-of-water situations as it explores themes of family bonds and staying true to oneself.
The film captures some of the essence and humor of the original TV series while introducing new elements for a fresh audience. Although opinions about adaptations can vary, “The Beverly Hillbillies” movie offers an entertaining twist on the beloved characters and their journey to riches.
