EVE (short for Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) is the sleek probe robot sent to Earth in Pixar's WALL-E, and she is one of the harder characters to wear because she has no legs, no hair and no face in the human sense. Her body is a glossy white egg, her head is a separate rounded shell with a black glossy screen and two glowing blue oval eyes, and her tapered arms float beside her body instead of attaching to it. The easiest way to get the shape right is the official Disney Pixar tunic above. In the listing photos it is a white egg-shaped body with a rounded head and tapered arms, so it keeps the silhouette people recognise from the poster. It is listed as a tunic and headpiece, and the photos show it styled with black leggings and sneakers, so pick both up separately. The link goes to the Medium; other sizes are on the same listing, so check the size chart before you order.

The eyes are what make her EVE, so keep them the brightest thing on the costume. Two rounded, slightly squashed blue ovals on a black panel is the whole face. She has no mouth and no nose, and the animators change her mood only by bending and squinting those eyes, so a flat black face with two glowing ovals is exactly right.

Weapon note: EVE's right arm can convert into a plasma cannon, which she uses in the film to blast obstacles. No prop matches it, because the cannon is built into her arm rather than held, and the official costume photos show no cannon. If you want it, build the barrel from white craft foam or a foam pipe-insulation tube with a blue LED tip, keep it clearly toy-like and soft, and check the venue or convention rules on prop weapons before you bring it. Many events ban anything that looks like a gun, however fake, and you should always be ready to leave it at coat check.

DIY EVE costume (no tunic)

Build the egg body (items 4 to 8). This is the shape-accurate DIY route, built from separate pieces rather than a dress. Wear the white helmet for the head, with two blue ovals made from the EL strip taped on the visor. Cut the base and two armholes out of the white trash can for the egg-shaped torso, sand the edges and pad them with foam tape. Taper the pool noodles into arms, strap them beside the body, and finish with the white satin gloves. For a cheaper head, use a white bike helmet with a black acrylic sheet cut into an oval screen on the front. The helmet limits your view and hearing; walk carefully, and don't drive or ride in it.

The easier non-egg routes follow.

The licensed costume is the closest match. There is no cheaper wearable egg-shaped EVE body on Amazon, only fried-egg and Easter-egg costumes, so a budget EVE is a white outfit that suggests the robot instead of copying it. It will read as EVE from the colour, the glossy finish and the eyes, not from the egg silhouette.

  • White base: a white long-sleeve mock-neck dress with the high neck sits like EVE's collar, and a white turtleneck jumpsuit works if you want legs covered. Add white tights and the same white sneakers.
  • Glossy arms: EVE's finish is high-gloss, not matte. Long white glossy wet-look gloves give the shiny tapered arm line down to the hand.
  • Blue eyes: the DIY face is the part that carries the costume. Cut a black felt oval, attach it to a white hood or white cap, and glue two blue round EL glow panels on it for the eyes. If you would rather wear something already made, a pair of LED visor glasses set to blue gives a glowing blue band across the face, though it is a straight bar rather than two ovals.
  • Chest detail: a small green leaf badge on the chest is the icon printed on the official EVE merchandise; a felt or sticker version is enough.

If you only want a quick, cheap nod to her, wear an EVE face T-shirt (a white tee printed with her black face screen and blue eyes) with white pants and white sneakers. It is much less of a costume, but it is easy to wear all night. On Etsy, fan-made sellers list white hooded EVE jumpsuits and dresses, for example this EVE jumpsuit with 24 favourites; read the reviews and look for real customer photos, since listing images are often edited.

Kids' and group ideas

For children, there is a girl's costume in the same egg-shaped style as the adult tunic. It is easy to wear for trick-or-treating, and the same black leggings and white sneakers finish it.

EVE and WALL-E work best as a couple or a duo with a friend or a child. Pair your EVE with WALL-E's own costume from Disguise, a rusty yellow box body, for a robot pair people can identify across the room. Fill out a group with the two robots and a friend in a plain grey or white robot costume as a background bot from the Axiom.

About EVE from WALL-E

EVE is a probe droid from the 2008 Pixar film WALL-E, directed by Andrew Stanton. She is sent from the human starship Axiom to scan Earth for signs of plant life. On a deserted, garbage-covered planet she meets the small trash-compacting robot WALL-E, who falls for her. When she shuts down after he shows her a living seedling, he clings to the rocket that collects her and follows her to the Axiom. Her voice in the film is Elissa Knight, and the electronic voice was first created by sound designer Ben Burtt. Stanton consulted the iPod's designer, Jonathan Ive, on her look, which is why her shell reads like a glossy consumer gadget. EVE is one of the best-loved Pixar robots, and if you want more from the studio, see our other Pixar costumes.
