Randall Boggs is the top rival scarer at Monsters, Inc. and the villain of the first film β€” sleek, purple, and always sneaking around a corner. He's the classmate-turned-enemy of Sulley and Mike Wazowski, and unlike either of them he can turn invisible at will. You won't be able to vanish for Halloween, but the rest of the look β€” purple scaly skin, a long tail, and a grin full of teeth β€” comes together with a bodysuit, some felt, and face paint.

Start with the bodysuit as your canvas. Because Randall wears no clothes at all in the films, a plain purple zentai suit reads more accurately than a hooded "dragon" or "lizard" onesie β€” those come with wings, horns or a fixed cartoon face that don't match him. Keep the face open so your own expression and the fangs show through.

The spot pattern is what sells the character up close. Randall's skin isn't uniform β€” it's a mottled wash of lighter and darker purple down his back, shoulders, and tail, closer to camouflage than to Sulley's evenly-spaced circles (fitting, since camouflage is literally his monster power). Tear or cut irregular blotches from two or three shades of the felt pack, and glue them heaviest down the spine and tail, thinning out toward the belly. Uneven and asymmetric looks more like real mottled skin than a neat repeating pattern.

For the face, cover any exposed skin in the purple greasepaint and blend it right into the bodysuit's neckline so there's no visible seam. Line your eyes to look larger and rounder β€” Randall's eyes are a distinctive yellow-green with a slit pupil, and even without colored contacts, dark eyeliner rounding out the lid shape gets the "reptile stare" across. Add the fang caps last for the grin.

If you'd rather skip the mottled-skin build entirely, the licensed jumpsuit-and-mask set above gets you Randall's scales, tail, and toothy face pre-made β€” just add the gloves and slippers to finish the hands and feet.

Budget or younger-kid alternative: go as "Randy" Boggs from Monsters University instead. Before he's the film's villain, Randall is a nervous, bespectacled freshman β€” round purple glasses over purple face paint and a plain purple shirt and pants, no tail, claws, or bodysuit required. It's a gentler, kid-friendly version of the same character.

Group idea: Randall completes the classic Monsters, Inc. trio with Sulley and Mike Wazowski β€” put him a few steps behind the other two, peeking around a corner, since that's exactly how he spends most of the movie.

About Randall Boggs

Randall Boggs is a purple, eight-legged chameleon-lizard monster and the antagonist of Pixar's Monsters, Inc. (2001) β€” though he mostly moves upright on two of those legs, using the rest to climb walls and ceilings. He's the top rival to Sulley for the company's scare record, and where Sulley scares kids the honest way, Randall schemes β€” building an illegal Scream Extractor machine to pull screams from children by force after Sulley and Mike start smuggling laughs instead. His camouflage ability, unique among the monsters in the film, lets him blend into walls and vanish mid-scene, which makes him one of the few Pixar villains who can physically disappear from the story and reappear behind you.

The prequel Monsters University (2013) reveals Randall β€” there nicknamed "Randy" β€” as a shy, friendly freshman who starts out as Mike's dorm roommate. When the popular Roar Omega Roar fraternity finally lets him in, Randy turns on his old friend to fit in, taking part in a prank that publicly humiliates Mike's team. He still doesn't make the cut with ROR, and it's that rejection β€” not a hazing he suffered, but one he inflicted and still lost everything for β€” that curdles into the resentment he carries into Monsters, Inc.

Randall is voiced by Steve Buscemi in both films.
