Moo Deng's own skin is a dark, wet-looking charcoal grey, almost black, with pink showing around the mouth and inner ears β most hippo onesies are a lighter cartoon grey with a white belly, so this reads as "hippo" rather than an exact skin-tone match, and that's fine for a recognizable costume. She's a pygmy hippo, so she's rounder and more compact than a cartoon hippo's stretched-out muzzle; if your onesie's hood has a long snout, that's the one detail worth noting doesn't quite match.
For a photo prop, nothing sells the costume faster than a slice of watermelon. It's her signature food in nearly every viral photo and video, and it's a lot easier to source than anything hippo-specific.
Don't want a full onesie? Build it from your own wardrobe instead: a charcoal grey or black long-sleeve top and leggings, the hippo ear clips above, and grey fingerless gloves for a hint of paw. Skip the mask for this version and let your face show β a lot of Moo Deng's appeal is her expression, not a full head covering.
Getting the details right
- Wet and glossy, not fuzzy. Pygmy hippo skin looks slick and damp, almost rubbery. If your onesie is a soft plush fabric, that's a stylization worth accepting rather than fighting.
- Small ears, small eyes, big round body. She's a baby of a naturally small species (adult pygmy hippos only reach about 500 pounds), so the proportions are stubby and round, not a scaled-down adult river hippo.
- The open-mouth "shriek" is the pose. Her most famous photos show her mouth open wide, mid-yawn or mid-protest. Practice that face for pictures.
About Moo Deng
Moo Deng is a pygmy hippopotamus born on July 10, 2024, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand, to parents Jona and Tony. Her name, chosen by public vote from the zoo's 20,000-plus respondents, means "bouncy pork" in Thai β a name shared in spirit with her half-sisters Moo Tun ("stewed pork") and Moo Wan ("sweet pork").
She went viral in September 2024 after zoo photos and videos, including one of her recoiling from a hose spray with a mortified expression, spread across social media and inspired a wave of fan art and memes. Visitor numbers at Khao Kheow Open Zoo more than doubled in the months after, and the zoo eventually limited visit times per group to manage the crowds drawn specifically to see her.
