Backrooms is the horror hit of 2026: Kane Parsons' A24 film, made for $10 million, grossed more than $400 million worldwide. It also gave Halloween two easy costumes. The first is the yellow Async hazmat suit that the Backrooms explorers wear. The second is Pirate Clark, the film's nightmare of a monster, who is a distorted copy of a furniture-store mascot. You can go as either, or bring both and let the pirate chase the explorer.

The suit is the whole costume, so make it look worn. The film's practical suits are bright yellow-green with a big hood and a dark visor, black gloves and black boots, and black slots on the chest and thighs. In Kane Parsons' videos, Async's supervisors wear a lime-green suit, so if you're going with a friend, one of you can be the boss.

Safety note: A hazmat costume and a costume gas mask are only costumes. They don't protect you from anything, so don't wear them for painting, cleaning or anything that needs real protective gear.

Pirate Clark is what the Backrooms make of Clark's furniture-store mascot outfit: a tricorn hat, a mustard vest over sea-green sleeves, a wide belt over a gray sash, and a face that's wrong. Wide eyes, a black beard and brown dried blood do most of the work.

Getting the details right

The height is what makes Pirate Clark frightening. Robert Bobroczkyi, who plays the creature, is 7 feet 7 inches tall, and the film builds the monster from a practical costume and a heavy mask, with digital work on the face and peg leg. You won't get that tall, but you can stand at the far end of a hallway, lean forward and keep your head tilted. Keep your eyes wide and your smile stuck.

For the makeup, use a pale, slightly dull skin tone with brown blood. The film's blood is dried, not fresh: smears at one temple, on the neck and down the vest. Dab the coagulated blood on with a sponge and don't overdo it.

Backrooms costume ideas for groups and couples

  • The explorer and the monster: one person in a yellow suit, one as Pirate Clark. It's the film in two costumes.
  • An Async team: three or four yellow hazmat suits with black cases. Add one lime-green suit for the supervisor.
  • Clark and his therapist: one of you as Clark in his mascot pirate costume from the commercials (the Pirate Clark outfit without the blood and makeup), and one as Dr. Mary Kline, played by Renate Reinsve, in a blazer.

If you're looking for another of 2026's big horror costumes, try Nikki Freeman from Obsession. The yellow hazmat suit also works for the cooks in Breaking Bad, so see our Walter White costume.

About Backrooms

Backrooms is a 2026 horror film directed by Kane Parsons, who made his name with the found-footage YouTube series it's based on, and written by Will Soodik. A24 released it in the U.S. on May 29, 2026, after a premiere on May 7. It cost about $10 million and has grossed about $402.5 million worldwide, the highest of any A24 film.

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Clark, a furniture store owner and failed architect who finds a portal in his showroom's basement leading to an endless maze of dull yellow rooms, buzzing fluorescent lights and long corridors. He tells his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), and the two go looking. The cast includes Mark Duplass as Async scientist Phil, Finn Bennett as Bobby, Lukita Maxwell as Kat and Avan Jogia as Naren, an Async explorer.

Clark is shown wearing a pirate mascot costume in commercials for his showroom. The Backrooms copies it, and that copy is Pirate Clark, played by Robert Bobroczkyi, who also played the Offspring in Alien: Romulus.
