Toph Beifong's look is the simplest of Team Avatar's outfits to recreate, and one of the easiest to get wrong in the small details. The earth-tone palette is forgiving, but her bare feet, off-center hair buns and blank, unfocused stare are exactly what make the costume read as Toph instead of a generic Earth Kingdom traveler.
How to Make Toph Beifong Costume
| # | Item | Description | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cream Wrap Top | A sleeveless top with a diagonal wrap front, in the same pale cream/beige as Toph's Earth Kingdom tunic. Wear it loose, not tucked in. | π Check on Amazon |
| 2 | Sage Green Wide-Leg Pants | Loose, high-waisted linen pants in an olive-sage green, gathered at the ankle. This is Toph's signature bottom color and the piece that sells the costume from a distance. | π Check on Amazon |
| 3 | Dark Green Obi Sash | A wide, dark forest-green wrap belt tied at the waist over the top, with the tails left hanging in front the way Toph wears hers. | π Check on Amazon |
| 4 | Green Tie Headband | A plain green fabric headband as the base for Toph's hair piece β see below for how to finish it. | π Check on Amazon |
| 5 | Black Twin-Bun Wig | A short black wig with two buns, styled close to Toph's side-parted hair with buns near the temples rather than on top of the head. | π Check on Amazon |
| 6 | Full Costume Set | An all-in-one option β robe-style top, pants, headband, and wrist/ankle wraps β if you'd rather buy the look as one piece than assemble it. | π Check on Amazon |
Toph's most recognizable outfit is what she wears for most of Avatar: The Last Airbender: a cream sleeveless top with a dark green sash, loose sage-green pants, and her hair tied back with a green headband. It's an Earth Kingdom outfit built for someone who fights barefoot and needs full range of motion, not a fitted or decorative look β keep everything loose and let the sash and headband carry the color.
Getting the details right
Go barefoot. This is the single most important detail. Toph "sees" through earthbending by feeling vibrations through the ground with her bare feet, and she's never shown wearing shoes in the entire series β not even boots for travel. If bare feet aren't practical for where you'll be (cold weather, a venue that requires footwear), barefoot sandal jewelry β a thin chain across the foot with no sole β keeps your feet effectively bare while satisfying a "shoes required" rule. Don't substitute real shoes or boots; it's the one thing that will make the costume unmistakably wrong.
Hair and headband. Toph's dark hair is parted and pulled back into two small, round buns positioned near her temples/ears, not stacked on top of her head, with the rest left loose around her face. The green headband sits across her forehead with a small gold/yellow circular emblem at the center. There's no retail version of that exact headband, so the easiest fix is to pin or hot-glue a plain gold button or flat gold charm onto the center front of a plain green headband.
The eyes. Toph is blind, and the show draws her eyes as a pale, slightly unfocused blue-green rather than a normal iris. A soft, pale-green or grey eye makeup look with a slightly unfocused gaze gets this across without any special equipment. If you want to go further with colored contact lenses, use only FDA-cleared lenses from a licensed seller and get them fitted β decorative lenses bought without a prescription or fitting are a real eye-injury risk, which is also why we're not linking a specific pair here.
Posture. Toph is blunt, tough and completely unbothered by her blindness β she stands with her weight low and her arms loose and ready, chin slightly up, none of the polite posture her wealthy Beifong upbringing tried to drill into her. A relaxed, confident stance sells the character as much as the clothes do.
Toph Beifong group and couples costumes
Toph works best as part of a Team Avatar group. Pair her with Aang as the group's Avatar, or Katara for the group's waterbender β the three of them together cover the show's core trio without needing a fourth person for Sokka.
About Toph Beifong
Toph Beifong is a main character in Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, introduced in season 2 as the blind earthbending master who joins Aang, Katara and Sokka. Born in 88 AG to the wealthy Beifong family of Gaoling, Toph was blind from birth and raised by overprotective parents who kept her sheltered and hidden from the outside world. At age six, she ran away and found a colony of badgermoles β blind, earthbending animals β and learned to "see" by reading vibrations through the ground, becoming the greatest earthbender of her generation and, later, the inventor of metalbending.
She was voiced in the original series by Michaela Jill Murphy (credited as Jessie Flower), who was eleven years old when she was cast. In the Avatar sequel series The Legend of Korra, set decades later, Toph is revealed to be the mother of Lin Beifong, Republic City's chief of police, and Suyin Beifong, founder of the metal city of Zaofu.
